Market Wrap International:
U.S. equities ended higher as weaker-than-expected labor-market data reduced expectations for another Federal Reserve rate hike, with September payroll growth falling well below forecasts and previous months revised lower, supporting technology and rate-sensitive shares despite renewed pressure in Treasury yields. Major markets in Europe recovered from the previous session’s bond-driven selloff as softer U.S. employment data and lower oil prices eased near-term rate concerns, while technology stocks led the rebound; however, euro zone inflation remained elevated and banking shares continued to reflect concerns over higher borrowing costs. Across Asia, trading was mixed as investors assessed the weaker U.S. jobs data and its implications for global rates, with Japan and South Korea supported by technology and semiconductor demand while Hong Kong remained under pressure from property and financial stocks; mainland China remained closed for the National Day holiday.
